Article essay
I will be looking at an article from the Guardian, the news article is about Fox wanting to own all of Sky news. In this essay I will be exploring different news values that apply to this article.
News values in simple terms means, what makes it into the news. The recent article about Fox wanting to own all of Sky has caught my attention and I would like to talk about some of the news values that were used in the article following the Galtung and Ruge 1981 theory.
Firstly, negativity is clearly presented even in the title “Future of Sky News faces review if no, Fox deal, says Sky”. This can catch the audience's attention quickly and more effectively especially to the Sky news audiences because this could mean a massive change to the news stories that will be publish after Fox starts to own Sky. If Fox own Sky this can mean bad news to Uk and the reason is because Fox has been known to be given out false news, edited pictures and a biased reviews. This goes against the rules of how news should be presented to the audience, it goes against: accuracy, fairness, impartiality and also accountability. Therefore, Fox trying to own Sky would be negative news.
Continuity and narrative can be shown because over the past few months there has been a continuous debate to whether Sky will let Fox own them or not let them be owned. The first article about them were in 15th Dec in 2016 with the headline of "Sky agrees to takeover by 21st century fox", this is when Sky agreed to give 39.1% of the company to Fox and from then on there has been a persistent debate to whether Sky will let Fox own them all or not. The use of binary opposition (following Levi’s theory) makes it seem more like a typical narrative with protagonists which is Sky and antagonist being Fox. However, it seems like Fox doesn’t want to give up on Sky news and tries to own them 100% by using methods such as increasing the bid or persuading them in different deals. Now it has gotten to the point where Sky news has to accept Fox’s deals to not make any dramatic changes to the news company and the news but it seems like some of the persuasion was effective to make Sky consider the deals too.
Negativity, continuity and narrative were the theories I explored in this article. These theories helped this article to sound a lot more important and makes the reader to read more in depth. The negativity in the headline made the tone of voice dark and serious which caught my attention and the continuity and narrative persuaded me to read the other articles that I have not yet read about between Fox and Sky.
You picked rather a difficult news article Sally! I'm not sure there are clear protagonists and antagonists.. however the other news values do apply fairly clearly. You could have given more specific examples from the article including quotations and analysis of images. C- (Vanessa)
